Children in Bawku West Still Study on the Floor

The delivery of elementary education in the Zongoiri Electoral Area in the Bawku West District of the Upper East region is being hampered by a shortage of furniture and infrastructure.

Children who brave the odds to remain in school must sit on the bare floor in demoralizing settings in addition to the low enrollment rate.

The state of the schools is bad, and has been for many years.

The majority of student’s study on their bellies, exposing them to a variety of health issues.

Some pupils report experiencing neck and waist discomfort.

While some sat or lay on their books, others had to stoop to using broken chairs as mats to keep their uniforms clean.

One of these communities with serious educational difficulties is the Bulinga, a rural community with a population of roughly 1,500.

Even though the junior high school was upgraded for the neighborhood years ago, no infrastructure was included.

The junior high students must live on the same block as the predominately elementary school children.

As a result, effective teaching and learning have been significantly hampered.

Naba Amalteng Anafo, the Sub-chief of Bulinga, sought support for the neighborhood school in public to address the issue.

The small-scale miners of Ateltaaba replied to the request by giving 200 dual desks to the schools.
