One Dead in Suspected Anthrax Disease outbreak in the Upper East Region

One person has reportedly died of suspected anthrax in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region after eating the carcass of an anthrax-infected cow.

According to the Upper East Regional Health Directorate, four cows died of anthrax in one of the suburbs of Binduri.

A team of health experts were quickly deployed to the district and are conducting contact tracing of people who were believed to have eaten the carcasses of the suspected anthrax-infected cows.

Preliminary investigation confirmed that four cows have died in the affected community.

Eleven suspected cases have so far been identified, and contact tracing efforts are underway in the affected communities.

The health directorate therefore caution the public, particularly communities and residents sharing borders with Binduri, to be on high alert and report any suspicion to prevent further spread of the disease.

At the moment, samples from all suspected persons are being taken for testing to inform appropriate action and treatment.

Medical experts have intensified risk communication about the disease and its prevention.

They are also urging members of the community to refrain from eating the carcasses of cattle without establishing the cause of death.

Cattle owners in all districts and adjourning ones are also urged to access veterinary services for holistic control of the disease.
