The government will make sure that pre-tertiary teaching and learning activities resume notwithstanding the strike action by three teacher unions, according to the Ghana Education Service (GES).
In protest against the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service’s appointment, three teacher unions—the Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Graduate Teachers, and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers—announced an indefinite statewide strike on Friday.
To put an end to the strike action, the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is currently having its second meeting with the teacher unions.
Last Friday’s initial meeting with the unions was unsuccessful in reaching a resolution.
Yaw Opoku Mensah, the GES spokesperson, expressed optimism that the government will put an end to the strike action by the end of the week in an interview with JoyNews on the margins of the meeting.
“We expect that today, probably I am hopeful that finality will be brought to this. There will be a closure on the matter by both parties. We do not expect the strike to drag for long, tomorrow or today we could see a positive response because I am confident with the kind of engagement that has gone on so far and both parties are committed to the cause,” he said.
