Journalist arrested and detained for criticizing McDan’s Electrochem salt project a year ago dead

Ghanaian broadcast journalist Noah Dameh, who was deputy station coordinator for Radio Ada, a community radio station in Greater Accra Region has died.

Noah died on September 20, 2023 after short illness.

Management of Radio Ada announced that “It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we, the Ghana Community Radio Network, received the shocking and devastating news of the passing of our beloved Noah Dameh, the Deputy station coordinator of Radio Ada. Today, we mourn the loss of a dedicated and passionate member of our media fraternity in Ghana.

“Noah Dameh’s untimely departure has left an indelible void in our hearts and in the broadcasting community”.the station said.

According to Management of the radio station , ” Noah was a staunch defender of the truth and remained resolute in his convictions until his last breath. We remember the courage he displayed during his two-week detention for allegedly disseminating information which those affected deemed untrue”.

The statement by management further said “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate family, who are undoubtedly experiencing immeasurable grief during this difficult time. We also extend our condolences to the entire media fraternity in Ghana, as we collectively mourn the loss of a remarkable journalist and advocate. As the Chair of the Executive Council of the Ghana Community Radio Network, I call upon all members to come together and support one another during this gloomy period. Let us draw strength from Noah’s unwavering dedication to his work and his belief in the power of media to effect positive change. Noah Dameh’s legacy will forever be remembered, and his contributions to community radio in Ghana will continue to inspire us. May his gentle soul find eternal rest in perfect peace”.

Noah Dameh was arrested in August 2022 for criticizing Businessman Daniel Mckorley’s Electrochem salt production company on Facebook.

His arrest caused approar among media fraternity as it was seen as persecution. This was after the radio station was raided and ransacked by unknown men.

He was granted bail and asked to report to Tema Regional CID Headquarters.

Noah explained that, ” I reported at the Tema Regional CID headquarters on Tuesday August 9. Complying with the court directives to report to police every fortnight on Tuesdays at 9:00 am as part of the bail conditions. Daniel Mckorley (McDan) and his ElectroChem salt production Company have reported my facebook post that raises questions on the salt lagoon monopoly lease to McDan that I posted on the 8th of May. Tema police CID unit has managed to criminalize my facebook post”

He continued “They arrested me, made me to write a statement and arraigned me before court in Tema. Thugs numbering about ten on the 13th of January attacked my workplace – radio Ada in search of Noah Dameh for leading “Manor Munyu” a radio programme that discusses the songor salt lagoon monopoly lease to McDan. The police seems to be passive in taking actions on the pistol and handcuff wielding thugs who went in search for Noah Dameh and subsequently beaten up the staff and guests who were present during the attack, but the police have been proactive enough to arrest and prosecute the victim of the thug, Noah Dameh. The struggle for collective livelihood and tolerance in decision making process still continues.

Noah celebrated his last birthday on earth on June 9, 2023.
