The Accra Circuit Court has convicted eight men for violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North re-run election, sentencing them to a total fine of 48,000 cedis.

Each convict was ordered to pay 6,000 (500 penalty units), with a default sentence of 24 months in prison.

The men were found guilty of conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault against Mavis Hawa Koomson, former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture; Majeed Mohammed Sanaa, a trader; and Chris Lloyd Ni Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The convicted persons are:

  • Mohammed Abubakar, private security officer
  • Jijani Mahmud, driver
  • Prince Dzakpasu, businessman
  • Anas Mohammed, estate developer
  • Mohammed Hamda, mechanic
  • Darko Otibu Samuel, businessman
  • Mush Muntari, station manager
  • Ali Saeed, businessman

Delivering the ruling, Isaac Addo emphasized that the non-custodial sentence should not be mistaken for leniency, stressing that defaulting on the fine would result in imprisonment.
