The Accra Circuit Court 10, presided over by Evelyn Asamoah, has remanded two police officers into custody over the alleged theft of 16 CZ assault rifles from the Ghana Police Service’s Counter-Terrorism Department armoury.

Lance Corporal William Atia Asitanga, 32, and Lance Corporal Sulemana Zanya Abdul-Rahman, 27, were charged with stealing and abetment to steal, respectively. Both have pleaded not guilty.

According to the prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye, the incident occurred in March 2024 at the National Counter-Terrorism Department in Accra, where Lance Corporal Asitanga served as an armourer responsible for managing the department’s weapons.

An internal audit during that period revealed the disappearance of 16 CZ assault rifles. Investigators say Asitanga, who had sole responsibility for the missing weapons, failed to account for them.

Further investigations allegedly linked Lance Corporal Abdul-Rahman, stationed at Asiwa in the Bekwai District of the Ashanti Region, to the theft, leading to his arrest on suspicion of aiding and abetting.

The court ordered that both accused remain in police custody while investigations continue. They are expected to reappear in court on August 20, 2025.

Police say the two officers are assisting with ongoing inquiries.
