It’s been eight days since President John Dramani Mahama began his second term, marking the end of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) eight-year rule. During the NPP’s tenure, some National Democratic Congress (NDC) appointees who served under Mahama’s previous administration were arrested, charged, and accused of willfully causing financial loss to the state.
The NDC, while in opposition, repeatedly claimed that the NPP was persecuting their members. Now that the NDC is back in power, the fate of these political cases hangs in the balance, especially since the Attorney-General who initiated these actions is no longer in office.
The approval of Attorney General nominee, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, by the Appointment Committee of Parliament could significantly impact the outcome of these cases. Some notable cases might be truncated, but the specifics will depend on the decisions made by the new administration and the judiciary.
