There appears to be more danger hanging over Bawku in the upper east region of Ghana following withdrawal of the Kusasi’s from the Statutory committee.

The Kusasi side of the inter-ethnic peace committee has announced their permanent exit from the group, on allegation of mistrust.

‘We have reached the end of the road, we cannot continue to waste out time on a committee that is clearly not working’,the co-chair and team leader for the kusasi’s, Naba Thomas Abilla stressed.

Bawku and Kusasi inter-ethnic conflicts

The bawku inter-ethnic peace committee was established in May 2009 during the height of the violent chieftaincy dispute.

The government-led initiative was to lead a localized mediation effort to bring about long-term peace in Bawku.

All of the ethnic groups in Bawku are represented on the committee, and the rival factions co-chair it.

The Kusasi side, however, asserts that the committee is not carrying out its mandate.
