National security needs proactiveness to combat terrorism- Francis Poku
Former national security coordinator, Francis Poku acknowledges that there is a massive gap in national security service thus, making it necessary for private security to augment the might of the National Security. He said this during a two-day Africa Security Conference at the Accra International Conference Center.
He noted that national security has private stakeholders and therefore the need to take private security seriously. He, however, admitted that the government has concerns regarding the proper regulation of the private security industry and conditions of service, as well as the welfare of private security personnel; and the need to standardize their operations.
Mr Poku believes there should be a joint collaborative effort between private and national security to ensure an upgrade in security in the country. The government should enact up-to-date legislation to regulate the activities of private security.
Speaking on the issue of terrorism within the sub-region, he lamented the lack of adequate police personnel. He called for more police and other security personnel to be trained in the country. He also called for the security service to be proactive in their work in order to counter possible terrorist attacks in the country.
